Oceanography Program

NSF support enabled Newton North High School to offer a capstone course—a special research course for seniors—in the sciences: Oceanography.  The Oceanography course explored the complex physical, chemical, and biological relationships that affect our oceans and in turn our coastlines, our weather, and our food. Through the course, students gained a deep understanding of oceans, their impact on us, and strategies to protect them and keep them healthy. NSF funds were used to purchase DVDs, videos, books and laboratory equipment and to support a team of science teachers from both Newton North and Newton South High Schools, with experience teaching marine biology, environmental science, meteorology, biology, physics, and chemistry, as they developed and honed the new curriculum.
