The Calculus Project (TCP) was created to give students of color and those who are economically disadvantaged an opportunity to embark on a very different academic trajectory. TCP uses advanced math as a powerful pathway to success for historically underrepresented students.

The Calculus Project
Since the Calculus Project’s (TCP) launch in the Newton Public Schools (NPS) in 2013, your financial support has played a key role in the significant enrollment growth NPS has seen in high-level mathematics among traditionally underrepresented student groups.
- Students build increased skill and confidence in math allowing them to thrive in advanced math classes.
- Skills gained boost student confidence in their other classes.
- Connections formed with TCP cohort students and teachers build feelings of inclusion and respect.
Last year, The Calculus Project in Newton currently served 250 students in grades 8-12.
The Calculus Project helps students build their math skills and confidence. Students attend a three-week intensive summer “math camp” where they preview the upcoming year’s math curriculum, learn life and study skills, and go on exciting field trips to STEM companies like Google and iRobot. Throughout the school year, they are offered twice-a-week after-school tutoring support.
Funding for this program depends on a public-private partnership between the Newton Public Schools, corporate donors, and generous individuals.

Over 200 NPS students of color and low income students between 8th-12th grade are currently participating in TCP, and 100% of TCP’s class of 2026 seniors are enrolled in honors or accelerated math.
Given these successes, more students are interested in participating each year and there is currently a growing waitlist. TCP relies upon generous corporate and individual donors to ensure its success. Your support helps ensure that every eligible student has the opportunity to be a part of the TCP program.
