Dr. Lisa Owens is an accomplished physician specializing in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s and other area hospitals.  However, this is not what is most notable about her personal journey.

At a basketball game on February 5, 2022, 15-year old Preston Settles, the beloved son of Lisa and her husband, Darryl Settles, and the beloved brother of Taylor Settles, collapsed from a rare cardiac event. Preston was hospitalized for three long weeks. The family’s story was followed within Newton, all across Massachusetts, and nationally.

Preston Settles passed away the evening of February 27, 2022.

Nothing short of thousands of friends, family and supporters gathered soon thereafter at the Trinity Church in Boston to pay their final respects to Preston at a uniquely beautiful and heartfelt service.

Since then, Lisa and her family have had to start the process of rebuilding. One step they were able to take was establishing the Preston Settles Memorial Fund, to provide and fund “PReston’s Hope: Accelerating discOvery and Care for people wiTh hypErtrophic CardiomyopaThy” (PROTECT).

Finding a path forward after such an unspeakable loss of course remains complex.
