Oceanography Program
NSF support enabled Newton North High School to offer a capstone course—a special research course for seniors—in the sciences: Oceanography. The Oceanography course explored the complex physical, chemical, and biological relationships that affect our oceans and in turn our coastlines, our weather, and our food. Through the course, students gained a deep understanding of oceans, their impact on us, and strategies to protect them and keep them healthy.

Publishing Center
NSF funding supported the creation of a new Publishing Center at Bigelow Middle School, enabling students and staff to create professional-looking documents and stunning multi-media graphics. NSF funds paid for eight new computers, an image scanner, three digital cameras, a large color printer, and Adobe’s Creative Suite software. This grant doubled the number of computers available to student journalists and designers for the Bigelow Beat school newspaper.

Raising Global Consciousness
A grant from NSF funded a comprehensive evaluation of the Global Communities Program and “Linked” History and English Programs at Newton South High School. The findings helped faculty understand the impact of these programs on students’ attitudes about global issues and perceptions of their teachers, classes and school community.
